THE LOVE OF A CAT

Ever notice all the different ways cats have to let you know they love you?  We’ve experienced all different kinds lately.

  • Some will climb onto your lap, even onto your pillow  and share it with you at night, while they lull you to sleep with their comforting, quiet purring.
  • Some others will do the same things, especially sharing your pillow with you, but will add to their display of love and closeness to you by licking your earlobes or forehead relentlessly at night until they become relentlessly painful and raw!  Makes one wonder sometimes ...
  • Then there are the amorous ones that think they’re Kings of the household - they do all the above too, but add love-bites to it. Love bites that can hurt!
    • Not all cats can be allowed in bedrooms.
  • Then you have the ones that remind you daily by showing how they “allow” you to live in their domicile, and even share a few things with you; like hair balls, any small dead animal or insect they can find, and insist you reward their straight-up, crooked tail hook with a loving pat.  These cats require YOU to love THEM! And don’t you DARE take their prize away from them!
  • And how about the ones that own the whole place but never let you know about it?  You never see them unless it’s mealtime.  When you want them, you can’t find them.  They love to try to make hamburger if you try to pick them up or disturb them in any way.  These are the love and let love cats.
  • Then there are the ones that sound like releasing steam from a steam heat radiator.  They emit that steaming sound at every move you make, except of course, the ones they like, like mealtimes.  Then they may decide to allow you a short burst of purring, very softly.
  • And talkers!  These are the worst!  They’re constantly meowing, yowling, squealing, sounding like they’ve being attacked by some invisible force, staring you in the eye the whole time, as though they don’t understand WHY you haven’t yet done what they want.
But all that talking is kind of nice when they’re in your lap, purring and talking softly to you.  How the heck does a cat purr and talk at the same time?
  • And the starers; they stare at you constantly, as though they’re working ESP on you, until they get SO irritated with you that they walk off in disgust, tail a wagging, to return moments later and try all over again.  Even when they lower themselves to lay in your lap, they continue to stare, only a little more lovingly at those times.
  • And last I’m reminded of the snob.  The one that runs from me, hisses at me, bats at me, evades even having to lay eyes on me, and yet is the softest, purringest, most loving cat you could ever imagine when my wife calls him.  Loves her - hates me.  Well, I guess even hate’s a kind of love, right?
  • Oh, I forgot:  They all love me when it’s time to be fed.
  • And they’re all SO much fun to watch play!  Cats seem to be the most playful animals in all of God’s creation.
